Melanoma Discovery

After returning from Florida, Sam booked herself into seeing her GP and was referred to a specialist to remove the swollen lymph gland for testing. After a couple of weeks, we went to get the results - and it was melanoma. That was devastating for me, but Sam seemed to take it in her stride. I remember when we got back from the appointment to Wilson's house in Silkstone Common, Sam dashed out of the car to get to the loo, and I had something in the boot I needed. Margaret came out of her house to see us, and I told her the news in floods tears. Margaret went into the house looking for Sam thinking she would be in need of some support too - but Sam was ok, not one tear! She wasn't going to cry over it, but she was definitely going to fight it. There were plenty of treatments on offer, such as the operation to remove more tissue, and radiotherapy on the area. Sam wanted to take everything on offer - she wasn't going to take it lying down. Sam went through the radiotherapy, tackling this head on and was an inspiration to me. This brought me strength actually and we were able to support each other. The skills we were learning here would prove critical later on. We just got on with things - doing what was necessary from Sam's treatment point of view, and getting on with life in the best way we could.
